Annual General Meeting

Report on 2018 AGM

On the afternoon of Friday, June 8th, Saskatchewan welcomed more than 60 Opimian Area Representatives, Hall of Famers, staff, and members from across the country for the 45th Annual and Special General Meeting (AGSM).

The AGM serves as an opportunity for members to meet the directors, Master of Wine, and senior management.  The formal agenda includes a review of the Financial Statements, election of auditors for the next year and the slate of directors.  Members also take this opportunity to become more familiar with the Opimian operation and ask questions of the directors and senior management.  The 2018 AGM included a Special Meeting to approve By-Law No. 1 – 2018 and to adopt resolutions of regularization to confirm all prior resolutions, by-laws, decisions and acts taken by the board of directors.  All items on the AGSM Agenda were approved by the membership.

This year marked the final year on the Board of Directors for members Bill Podolsky (Winnipeg, MB) and Gerry Armstrong (Victoria, BC).  Although their shoes will be difficult to fill, we are pleased to welcome Twyla Laakso (Calgary, AB), John Birdgeneau (Calgary, AB) and David Conway (St. John’s, NL) to the board.

The 2018 AGSM also marked the 4th and final occasion where the AGM would be chaired by Opimian’s President and Chair Lois-Anne Brebner.  Fortunately for Opimian, Lois-Anne will remain on the board for one more year as Past Chair providing guidance and insights to our newly elected President and Chair, Paul Reimer.

During her remarks Lois-Anne expressed her gratitude to Opimian for the privilege of serving as President and Chair and thanked the dedicated directors and staff who supported her during the past four years.

We want to thank all members who turned out for this wonderful occasion and look forward to seeing you next year in Toronto, Ontario.

Hall of Fame

On the evening of Friday, June 8th, more than 75 attendees gathered in the beautiful and picturesque Hotel Saskatchewan located in the heart of Regina, Saskatchewan to honour  three outstanding Opimians who were being inducted into the Opimian Hall of Fame.Stories were exchanged, tears were shed but ultimately laughs were heard throughout the evening as Opimian inducted the following members:

Theodore (Ted) Jager is arguably one of the most interesting men to meet.  Ted has been a member of Opimian since 1982.  During his 36 years, Ted has rarely missed an Opimian event, in fact, he has attended more than 90 Chapter events.   But Ted doesn’t just attend, he participates, offers assistance to the Area Representatives and helps new members with their Opimian orientation.

Philip (Phil) and his wife Jan have been Opimian members since 1980 and have served a variety of roles with the organization since 1992.  Phil served as Area Representative of Vancouver Island from 1992 to 2004 before becoming a member of the Board of Directors from 2004 until 2015.  During his tenure on the BOD, Phil served as Opimian President from 2010 until 2014, and as Past President in 2015.During his tenure as President Phil oversaw a number of business-related issues including resolution of the conflict with Black Prince Winery, oversaw the hiring of Jane Masters, launched the new Opimian Bylaws, and negotiated the asset purchase of Shefford Administrative Services.

David and his wife Sherrill have been passionate members of Opimian since 1990. David’s commitment to Opimian has been expressed in the many roles he has undertaken: as Area Representative for the Toronto-West chapter from 1997 – 2009, as a member of the Board of Directors from 2009 to 2015, as Secretary of Opimian from 2010 to 2015 and as a member and Chair of Opimian Vineyard Trust (OVT). During that span, David and Sherrill also led seven California Wine Tours as well as tours to the Niagara Region.
