No true wine experience is complete without food and great discussion. Opimian's tasting events are the perfect venue to cultivate your palatte. Our events allow new members to taste and sample Opimian wine, meet other Opimian members and learn more about the wine world from vintage Opimians. Our vintage Opimians attend to meet up with long-time friends, enjoy new Opimian wines and challenge their palette. Tasting events are organized by Opimian Area Representatives, creative individuals who love to organize memorable events for members. Every year, over 150 events are held from coast to coast to coast, designed, organized and implemented  by these intrepid volunteers.

Opimian members are welcome to attend any Opimian event across the country. If you are planning a vacation or have a business trip coming up, check back here to see if there will be an Opimian event at your destination - a night out on the town with other like-minded wine lovers will be a great way to unwind after your travels.

Guests and non-members are also welcome to attend any Opimian event; in fact, tasting events are the best way to get to know Opimian!

All of our events are listed below. If you are interested in learning more about an event or attending, please click on the link provided for more information. All reservations must be made with the Area Representative organizing the event (contact information can be found on the PDF).

Events in March

Friday, March 27th, 2015

Toronto, Ontario
An Iberian Peninsula Exploration

Time: 6:15 pm
Price: Members & First Guest: $115.00** per person

This will be a sunny event designed to explore the wines of Portugal and Spain and celebrate the end of winter in the cozy confines of Spanish restaurant Segovia. You will have the opportunity to compare and contrast the wines from Spain and Portugal both at the reception and at dinner. At the reception, contrast the regional wines of Quinta da Barreira from Portugal, with Spanish wines from the Barberà de la Conca. And at dinner, the Portuguese Douro region can be compared with excellent wines from the Rioja and Toro regions of Spain. The wines will be complemented by a fine menu put together by Ino, the Executive Chef at Segovia. For 19 years, Segovia Restaurant has been serving Torontonians and travelers alike flavourful food paired with Spanish wines. Segovia provides a unique atmosphere in which to enjoy the evening, with its bi-level structure eminently suitable to hosting an event of this nature. The reception will be held in the Prado Lounge, on the upstairs floor of the restaurant. Then we will go downstairs to the main dining room to experience the culinary delights that Chef Ino has put together for our enjoyment. This event will truly be an opportunity to celebrate the end of winter with sunny Spanish experience. Join us at Segovia and embrace the charm of fine Spanish dining complemented by excellent Opimian Spanish and Portuguese wines. We expect this event to be extremely popular with members, so please register promptly as space is limited.

Calgary, Alberta
Wine Cellar-Bration: A "What to Order" Evening

Time: 7:00 pm

This popular event is finally back and we promise there will be lots of wines to sample! This special tasting will include wines from the last four Opimian Cellar Offerings of the 2015 ordering season. Have you ever browsed the Cellar Offering wishing you could try something new? Selecting the right wine can be an overwhelming experience. Join us for an evening of sampling a wide variety of Opimian wines – an event designed to help you discover new favourites. Wine Cellar-bration will be a table-top tasting where you can sample a variety of wines from regions such as Italy, Germany, Austria, Bordeaux, Beaujolais, Burgundy, the Midi, the Loire Valley, Spain and California. Take lots of notes, because you will want to remember your favourites, including that more expensive wine you have been meaning to order! Are you a new member? In addition to introducing you to some Opimian wines, you will meet and mingle with fellow members in a relaxed and informal atmosphere at the newly renovated Blackfoot Ballroom at the Hotel Blackfoot. Tour de France

Spring is coming soon and it is time to celebrate. Limber up your arm muscles and join us at the Red Deer Golf and Country Club for an oenological Tour de France. Come along for the ride as we enjoy Opimian wines from various wine regions of France. We will get the wheels in motion with a casual reception where you will sample a light and delightful sparkling wine from Alsace along with appetizers. From there our journey takes us through Burgundy, the Southern Rhone Valley and finishes on the left bank of the Gironde River in Bordeaux. Throughout the evening you will enjoy some fine Opimian wines and the culinary expertise of Chef Marion and her staff. C'est magnifique!

Halifax, Nova Scotia
A Taste of Chile

Time: 6:30 pm
Price: Members & First Guest: $109.00** per person

Join us in celebrating Chile’s summer season at The Halifax Club on Saturday, March 28th, 2015. This evening offers Opimian members and guests the opportunity to experience grape varieties from this well-established wine region. With its incredible 4,200 kilometre coastline, Chile has an amazing diversity of climate and geography. With the Atacama Desert to the north and the desolate ice fields of Patagonia to the south, winemaking in Chile is confined to a small central belt of the country with a more moderate climate. Chile offers fruity, oaky Chardonnays and juicy, ripe Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, to name only a few. One of the most interesting names on a Chilean label is Carmenére, a variety once believed to be Merlot, but now discovered to be a forgotten Bordeaux grape which has been living happily in Chile all along. It makes a vibrantly fruity and deeply flavoured wine. Throughout the evening we will be enjoying five different wines from this region. Executive Chef Nelson Francis of The Halifax Club has designed a delicious three-course dinner to compliment these incredible Chilean wines. Enjoy this wine tasting and dining experience while soaking up the history and ambiance of the historic Halifax Club. Regina, Saskatchewan
Wine 101

Time: 7:00 pm
Price: Members & First Guest: $50.00** per person

Wine is magical and in this class we’ll learn the magic of changing grapes into wine. Wine grapes are grown all over the world, with different grapes thriving in different regions & different climates. There are different systems of viticulture and vinification which produce markedly different styles of wine from the same grapes; for instance, the end result of Sauvignon Blanc produced in France could be different from that produced in New Zealand. The evening will be led by Opimian Area Rep Valerie Bradshaw, who recently received a certificate status from the Alexandre Schmidt Olfactory Education system. Valerie has her accreditation from The French Wine Society and The Spanish Wine Academy, and has achieved Level 2 Sommelier status with the International Sommelier Guild. Valerie is currently at the Diploma level study of Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) and passed with Merit the Level 3 Advanced Certificate in Wine & Spirit Professional Studies. Bring a guest to be part of this educational evening of wine, culture and friendship!

Regina, Saskatchewan
Weakness for Sweetness

Time: 7:00 pm
Price: Members & First Guest: $50.00** per person

There are many styles of wine in the wine-world, but few have the history and the impact than do wines made in the Sweet Style. Sweet wine falls into the categories of: Port, Sauternes, Botrytis and Tokaji, among others. In this class, we will look at several different producers of Sweet Wine from around the world, but will concentrate on Sauternes, the deliciously sweet wine made in the Bordeaux region of France. The class will be led by Opimian Area Representative Valerie Bradshaw, who has traveled extensively through wine growing regions of Bordeaux, Val has received accreditation from The French Wine Society, enabling her to speak with authority on all regions of France and the styles of wine produced in each region. She is a member of The Guild of Sommelier, having achieved Level 2 Sommelier status with the International Sommelier Guild. Valerie is currently at the Diploma level study of Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) having passed with Merit the Level 3 Advanced Certificate in Wine & Spirit Professional Studies.

Join us for dinner at Blue on Water Restaurant for a classic rematch of the final of the 2012 Euro Cup of soccer. Italy vs. Spain! Only this time, it's with wine Italy and Spain are both renowned as amazing producers of fine wines in the world. And their rivalry extends far past the Mediterranean We'll taste and enjoy the wines in turn with time to discuss each one. And they will be accompanied by the fantastic food of the kitchen of Blue on Water Restaurant. A Night of Discoveries

We recently had the opportunity to dine in one of Montreal’s best Bring Your-Own-Wine restaurants, and we wanted to share our discovery with you. Please join us at the fantastic Le Wellington restaurant where we have secured the entire restaurant for an evening of fine dining and fine wine. Le Wellington is owned by a group who include Marc-André Paradis and Frédéric Leblond, the restaurateur duo who run a number of “branché” Bring-Your-Own-Wine eateries including O'Thym, Les Héritiers, Les Canailles, Monsieur B and Le Smoking Vallée. This gem of a restaurant features Chef Jean-François Pigeon and Maître d' Sophie Bergeron, who provide an exceptional experience from the moment you walk in the restaurant to the time you leave. Carolyn and I will bring wines from a few different countries for you to sample when you arrive, and then wines from five different countries for you to choose from and pair with your dinner choices. To add a little fun to the evening, we will not tell you where the wines are from, but instead will let you guess their country of origin. As the evening progresses, we will reveal the wines that were served and give you some information about them. Of course there will be prizes for those who guess the correct responses! We hope that you can join us for this fantastic Evening of Discovery, where we know that you will not only discover some new Opimian wines, but a superb little restaurant that we’re certain will soon become one of your favourites as well!

Bordeaux Wines: Left Bank vs Right Bank

Bordeaux is a celebrated and highly coveted wine blend making up some of the most expensive and prestigious wines in the world. Like many wines with a long history, there’s a lot to learn, but we will cover the basics in this Left Bank vs Right Bank tasting and wine pairing dinner. You will experience high value wines, many $50-$80, in a relaxing setting at the venerable Union Club of British Columbia. This tasting will be taking place around the time of the 2015 Bordeaux offering making it an excellent opportunity try last year's arrivals. Old vs. New

The old world is where wine began, but many people say the new world is where wine history is now being made. There are many differences between wine regions and the tastes they produce, but why? Is it that the old regions are steeped in tradition and rules about how wine can be made that leaves them without room to innovate, or is it something else? At this event we will sample and compare wines of the old and new wine worlds and some of the exceptional food it inspires. We are pleased to invite you to the Sawridge Inn on April 18th for a friendly battle between wines of the old and new worlds. The old world wines may have history and reputation on their side, but the new world is showing that it has plenty to rave about. Margaret and I would be pleased if you come join us on April 18th and decide for yourself the winner of the battle of “Old versus New” wines!

A Taste of the Americas

Join us for an evening at Emma’s Restaurant at the Village of Tansley Woods to taste wines from California, Chile and Argentina accompanied by a wonderful menu prepared by the chef, Greg Leon. Village of Tansley Woods Retirement Phase
in Burlington (opened in June of 2013) is a unique continuum of care, with Emma’ Restaurant on the 10th floor that also enjoys an interesting view of the Lake, Escarpment and Oakville. Michael Killip is the Director of Hospitality with Schlegel Villages at the Village of Tansley Woods. Michael was the Executive Chef at Paradiso Restaurant in Oakville from 1993 to 2002, following that he opened Twisted Fork Restaurant in Bronte. While working there for 8 years, he was on Food Network’s “Eat, Shrink and be Merry” along with various TV programs. Bring a friend and introduce them to the enjoyment of being an Opimian!

This beautiful old structure has been creatively restored by the Cafe owners, Jim & Lesley Brickman. The interior finishes and fixtures are designed to showcase the practical uses of reclaimed materials and architectural treasures found next door at The Timeless Materials Co. The result is an original eating destination, in a warm and
friendly atmosphere. The Timeless Cafe & Bakery sources the finest fresh, local ingredients available, as the changing seasons allow throughout the year. As Opimian members learned in 2014, the food at Timeless Cafe & Bakery is outstanding. Timeless Café & Bakery is opening especially for Opimian members on a Wednesday evening. The wine pairings and tastings have been designed by Chef Jason Hanoski to highlight remarkable selections from Castoro Cellars.
