Mâcon

Wine Regions

The Mâconnais region is the most Southern part of Burgundy. It starts at Tournus and runs approximately 50 kilometres southwards to the villages of Pouilly, Fuissé and Saint-Véran just south of Mâcon. As with the rest of Burgundy, limestone soils predominate with layers of marl, silt and gravel. Monks from Abbaye de Cluny started their own vineyards in the year 910. The wines, at first used to celebrate mass, were eventually commercialized as production increased. In the 15th century, it was sold all over Europe.
